Copyright Collaborative

A hardworking artist (me!) creating a design

Today’s Artsy Shark website features a blog post by Intellectual Property attorney Emily Danchuk about artists’ designs being stolen and reproduced for a profit – a practice known as copyright infringement.

As Danchuk is quick to point out, copying an artist’s work to use in a home project is distinctly different from reproducing it for the purpose of selling it in any form. Whether it ends up on a canvas, prints, pillows, phone cases or anything else, the latter practice is considered stealing.

Attorney Danchuk has founded Copyright Collaborative, a movement “designed to educate, empower and unionize artists in the fight against copyright theft.” It might surprise you to learn that American big box retailers like Urban Outfitters or Target have a reputation for being involved in Art & the Infringement Culture.

Copyright Collaborative also has a page called Effigies with images of many original artworks shown side by side with their knock-offs.

Kaji Aso Studio 12th annual public art exhibit

“Galaxy and Fireflies, Mississippi River” watercolor and gouache by Kaji Aso 1984

The Kaji Aso Studio is having its 12th annual public art exhibition at the Prudential Center featuring the work of 19 artists. I happened upon it a few days ago while walking through the skylit arcade, and found it just as beautiful and captivating as prior shows they’ve had there. If you are in Boston and get a chance to visit it before it ends November 15, it’s well worth seeing.

The opening reception is today, Saturday, November 1, 3-5 pm!

There will also be an evening of music accompanying the show on Friday, November 7th, 7:30-9 pm.

You can learn more by visiting the Kaji Aso Studio’s Facebook Page.
